"Thanks again - great product - a lot easier to use than some of the ones I looked at and you really can make it look like your own site, which is probably why I won't rush to integrate it."

Technical Q & A about Easy Availability
(These FAQs all relate to 'Post-sales' technical issues. If you require answers to general 'Pre-sales' questions then visit the 'FAQ' page.)

Installation Questions

What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer protocol and is a way of transferring files from one computer to another. Typically, website owners use FTP to transfer files between their home PC and their web host's server.

How can I get hold of FTP software?
Some Windows-based FTP software is available free of charge, and we can suggest Smart FTP which is available (free for private use) from Download.com. In addition, we can suggest http://www.coreftp.com/ who also offer a free version for download.

Both companies provide good on-line instructions and tutorials, although the tutorials at SmartFTP are perhaps more comprehensive. See SmartFTP Online Tutorials

How do I use FTP?
A full set of instructions is beyond the scope of this answer, but the two links below will take you to sites where good instructions and tutorials exist.

However, in overview most modern FTP software uses a graphical interface which shows two 'windows' on your PC screen. Typically, the left hand screen shows a listing of the directories and files on your local PC while the right hand window shows a listing of the directories and files on the web server you are connected to. Transferring files between the two is usually as simple as selecting them in one window and then pressing a 'transfer' button to have them transferred.

An important point to remember is that files must be transferred in the right mode to avoid corruption of the data. Usually this is ASCII mode for text files and Binary mode for images. Many 'modern' FTP programs will have an 'auto' setting which will attempt to analyse the file for you and transfer it in the right mode. N.B. As far as Easy Availability is concerned, you should ensure that your FTP package is transferring the images in Binary mode and everything else in ASCII mode.

What mode should the Easy Availability files be uploaded in?
N.B. As far as Easy Availability is concerned, you should ensure that your FTP package is transferring the images in Binary mode and everything else in ASCII mode.

Why do I need to change file permissions?
Because web server operating systems place a heavy emphasis on who is allowed to Read, Write, and Execute files and scripts on your server. This is for security purposes. In Easy Availability there are a couple of files that need to be marked as 'Writeable' in order for the program to work.

How do I change file permissions?
This depends whether you are on a Linux/Unix server, or on a Windows server. For those on a Linux/Unix server the situation is easier to explain and execute because the permissions can usually be set via your FTP program using a function known as CHMOD.

Linux/Unix: Open your FTP program and connect to your website. On your web server, navigate to the files for which you wish to change permissions. Highlight each file and use CHMOD to set its permissions. On some FTP programs, this is as easy as right-clicking the file and choosing 'CHMOD' or 'Permissions' from the fly-out menu.

Windows: Methods to set Windows file permissions are a little less specific because there is no standard way for users to change file permissions remotely. Windows does not support FTP CHMOD. The normal solution is to access your website via its 'Control Panel' and to use the Control Panel's internal file manager to navigate around your files and change the permissions as necessary.

For security purposes the Easy Availability files and their permissions are not listed here, but can be found in the Installation guide (INSTALL.TXT) that accompanies the product.

How do I link to my existing web pages?
Easy Availability contains an automatic link maker which enables someone with no HTLM knowledge to be able to link back from the availability page to any page on their site. Linking the other way - i.e. from your existing site pages to your new 'availability page' - will necessitate placing a link or links within your existing site pages.

Customising/Operating Availability Pages

PLEASE REMEMBER that nearly all aspects of operation are covered in the on-line manual. The following are for some less-than-typical situations.

How do I not show any prices at all?
Login to your Easy Availability admin page. Click the button that allows you to change page text and prices. Go down to the option 'I want to show a 'price grid'' and select 'No'. Now save the page. You will see that the price grid has now disappeared.

How do I revert to the default colours?
If you are unhappy with the colour changes you have made to your page, then getting back to the default colours (those that the product shipped with) is very easy. Just go to the Easy Availability admin page and click the button labelled 'Click to Edit page colours'. Once on the colour change page, simply click the button labelled 'Click to Restore Default Colours'.

Integrating into my existing website

How do I Add my existing menu bar or change the page layout?
(Don't attempt any internal file customisation without first backing up your file).

To reformat the page layout, you will need to edit the HTML code in the page 'availability.php'. You should not attempt to edit this file in FrontPage or any WYSIWYG editor unless you are confident that it can deal with PHP files without 'breaking' them. Instead you should use a standard ASCII text editor (like Windows Notepad).

Once inside the file you should edit the HTML according to your needs whilst ensuring that you leave any code within PHP tags (<?php like this ?>) completely alone. Most of the display and formatting of availability.php is handled by HTML, with PHP responsible only for the automatic generation of the central calendar, some of the CSS tags, and the page's Meta data (Page Title, Description, Key Words). The remainder can be changed by anyone competent with HTML, but care should be taken not to interfere with the PHP tags or the page will cease to function.

Those who wish to experiment with formatting may like to buy an HTML book to guide them along. One of the best, the most popular, and the most-widely regarded books for beginners is Elizabeth Castro's bestseller 'HTML for the World Wide Web'
